Pride Month- Love is Love
June is known as the month of pride. This is to celebrate and acknowledge the LGBTQ+ community and recognize their existence within our everyday social circles.
The LGBTQ+ community is highly discriminated against in many countries and is not even recognized in others. When we talk about recognition, we talk about accepting and acknowledging their presence and principally speaking, not making their identities illegal.
Often, this receives backlash in the form of questions such as why we need to celebrate this community. It is definitely important to celebrate as this community has always been unable to live and belong to their societies or groups due to irrational stigmas and prejudices. As responsible citizens of a nation, it is our role to accept each and every member of every community, because every person deserves to belong. This celebration not only gives them a space to express themselves but also validates each one of them as individuals just like you or me.
The celebration isn't simply about recognition, but also equality. Many times, the LGBTQ+ community is denied opportunities or even basic equal rights. If any other being is able to exercise their rights, why not them?
Many rights are denied to LGBTQ belonging individuals such as the right to marry, to adopt children, to live together, to be in a relationship, to indulge in intercourse, or sometimes even identifying as LGBTQ+.
Peaceful parades and marches often take place to celebrate their acceptance and existence, and these can be filled with colours, chants, slogans. The global pride day is on the 28th of June, and this is an important day for all.
Be an ally, and make sure to tell the LGBTQ+ community persons in your social circles that you support them. This support is simply just telling them that you can be trusted, you will be there for them and accept them because there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a part of the community.
And, if you are a part of the community, Happy Pride month to you!
Thanks for this article Sanjana. I agree with you and I will celebrate the 28th of June - the global pride day.
