Artificial intelligence is a Threat to Humanity
Artificial intelligence is a Threat to Humanity
The first construct overlooks humanity. The collection of the human race, and the behaviours that distinguish us. AI was created by us, for us. The increasing subconscious dependence on AI is making us withdraw from basic interactions and reactions we give as humans. Human closeness is diminishing as AI reduces the need for people to live as a collective society, helping and depending on each other. Something that should've been a little way of convenience is actually dominating our entire lives and taking away the humanness in us. Things like AI facial recognition- this has launched what many civil liberties groups believe is alarming surveillance of the public taking away from general privacy. Deepfakes-it has the ability to not only damage an individual's reputation but livelihood. The technology is getting so advanced that the possibility for people to be duped by it is high-image morphing and blackmailing individuals with sexual advances are prevalent, Unemployment due to AI tech is also not unheard of. making its way into the medical and industrial sectors, the science fiction idea of robot domination is not fiction anymore.
Streaming from this is the next construct. Nick Bostrom wrote in his book- AI is a little bit like children playing with a bomb that could go off at any time. From the expansion of autonomous drones and the introduction of delivery of diseases through nanorobots. Our law enforcement and defense organizations will need to adjust to the potential threat these present. ai can be destructive, and we've reached that point on the spectrum. Being discussed for the use in warfare and brutality, those who fall behind in the AI race are warned. The developed nations remained equipped with unregulated technology on their hands, but the nations that can’t afford such technology remain vulnerable. This possession of ai clearly draws an imminent disparity- the possibility of a bipolar world and domination of the developed nations remains a threat.
Eg- Chinese advances in AI-enabled weapons systems could impact the international military balance, The US is also frighteningly close to an AI-based autonomous arms race.
Side opposition may claim that the use of AI- if regulated- can help with our daily lives. Disproving this, our third construct outlines the commercial, unregulated and unethical use of AI. As tech giants like Facebook, Instagram and youtube begin to venture into this field, we see the amount of information that is tracked on us. We often see mass data breaches by hackers on these platforms, where user’s data is put up on the dark web- all using ai. More to this, these tech giants claim to protect our information with absolutely no regulation and no transparency in the system. One huge example is the 2016 U.S. presidential election- where Cambridge Analytica's app built psychological profiles of thousands of users and personalized republican posts and ads towards them for political manipulation and to amplify misinformation.
In conclusion, The amount of AI embedded in our surroundings makes it extremely hard for us to escape it-only a utopian world will have absolutely regulated ai, but again, a perfect world would have no ai considering how detrimental it is to our existence. Thank you.
